The Monument Of Heroism

Hiking

The Route:
The monument was designed by Jerusalem sculptor Naomi Henryk and was inaugurated at a festive ceremony held on March 15, 1967, in the presence of the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Levi Eshkol, veteran fighters of the Harel Palmach Brigade, the participants in Operation Nachshon, IDF Chief of Staff Yitzhak Rabin and Central Command Chief Uzi Narkis, and the bereaved families.

At the foot of the monument is a limestone stone with the inscription:"A hand for the forgers of the way to Jerusalem. and its defenders: the War of Independence, 1948, and the verse"" For Zion I am alive, and for Jerusalem, I will not rest".

The monument was erected on the Mashav hill above the Shoresh interchange (north of Highway 1). This hill was located on the hill of Khyrbet a-Zankula, which was destroyed during the War of Independence, leaving a remnant of one house. The hilltop reaches 662 meters above sea level and offers a view of the coastal plain.

During the 1948 War of Independence, Jerusalem was besieged, and the road to Jerusalem was subject to Arab attacks. Many of the Hish and Palmach fighters fell in battle as they tried to break through the besieged road to Jerusalem.

On the side of the road leading from Sha'ar Hagai to Jerusalem, remains of armored vehicles and trucks from the War of Independence can be seen, which were part of the convoys that tried to reach the city.

What more?
The monument is located on public land, but the access road to it is on private land, and the road is blocked by a gate. Do not attempt to pass.
It is not recommended to get to the monument on a hill slope. There is a danger of getting separated from the parking lot, a two-minute walk to the elliptical area, from which you can take a good view of Highway 1 and the Jerusalem hills, from which you can also see the monument a few meters up the hill.

How to get there?
From Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on Route 1 turn right to Sho'eva, turn right at the circle and drive under the bridge to the next circle, take its second exit (to the right) and drive on the dirt path to the parking lot.
